| Abstract |
| | Residual stress in the rim of railroad solid wheel was measured nondestructively by an acoustoelasticity method. The experiment was performed using an EMAT (electromagnetic acoustic transducer), in which acoustic copulant between transducer and specimen required for the conventional one with PZT was not necessary. The trial-produced EMAT equipment for nondestructive residual stress measurement and the resolution of measurement is discussed. The residual stress variation in the rim of railroad wheel while in service was also followed by the equipment for one year. It is concluded that the comparatively high resolution was obtained, and the equipment is found to be useful for nondestructively measuring the residual stress of the wheel rim in service. |
