| Abstract |
| | A prototype test system for the nondestructive measurement of residual stress measurement railroad wheels has been evaluated, and the results compared to destructive rim force measurements. The test system employs the magnetoacoustic method of stress measurement, and represents the transition of this approach from a laboratory technique to an industrial tool. Both the development of this system and the refinement of the test methodology have been documented. This paper presents only a brief review of the pertinent physical theory and mechanical considerations involved in testing railroad wheels. Emphasis is placed on determining the degree of corroboration with destructive referee measurements, and assessing factors which apparently limit this correlation. |
