| Abstract |
| | Overbraked and heat-discolored monobloc wheels will be removed from service by the German State Railways to prevent the fracture of these wheels and the accompanying accidents. According to practical experience, not all wheels with heat-discoloration extending four or more inches from the rim into the plate region are damaged so heavily that reuse is excluded. Criteria have been developed by means of fracture mechanics for the allowable residual tension stresses in the rim. Assessments of whether the wheel is damaged or reuseable are made by means of eddy-current testing of the tread of the wheel. R7 and R9 are used as test materials.
