| Abstract |
| | This paper gives a description of the design and operation of a prototype acoustic signature inspection system for railroad wheels. The objective of this system is to inspect the wheels on a moving train in situ as it goes past an inspection site, and to process and analyze the data acquired in real time. The system has been installed and is presently being operated on a Southern Pacific line. At present, the decision to inspect a wheel is made by a human operator who uses computed parameters such as resonant frequencies. Using a train with a variety of defective wheels assembled for test purposes, the detection rate is 45% of defective wheels with automatic settings that would produce a false alarm rate of less than one in three on revenue service trains. 4 ref.-AA |
