Ultrasonic Testing of parts with complex geometries

ABSTRACT

For a while now, there have been requests for a reliable test of complex geometries by UT methods. Two reasons for that are: increased safety standards, especially for nuclear power plants and cases of damage or new fracture modeling. This article introduces the test method on two examples of complex-shaped parts.

The first example is a EB-dobble welding of a helium cooled wall. In the wall are two cooling fluid channels and a control panel. The Nuclear Research Center in Karlsuhe provided the test piece.

The second example is a rotor shaft. For that a test comb was developed that enables us to perform the sound incidence from the tip or edge of the tooth.
