Abstract

Imaging plate (IP) autoradiography systems used in biomedical fields were analysed for their fitness for NDT. The three components determining the image quality were measured for the evaluation. IP's have to be applied under specific conditions. By using thicker lead screens than for x-ray films the same specific contrast could be attained as for film. Longer exposure times than for medical applications yield S/N ratios comparable to good film system classes. The unsharpness of about 80 µm for the best IP-systems may restrict the utilization for fine crack detection (welding), but the high dynamic range may offer new advantages in the inspection of objects with large wall thickness changes.
