Abstract
Die casting tools operate at elevated temperatures and high pressures. Consequently certain temperature and stress fields generate in the tool. A cyclic repetition of thermal stresses results in material fatigue and initiation and propagation of cracks, which may result. in untimely failure of the tool. If untimely failure of tools is to be avoided, i.e. if tool life tiime is to be extended, a greater attention should be paid to the very design of the product since the latter has a decisive influence on thermal and stress conditions in the tool and so has the tool manufacture. Additional improvements of the tool may be made also after a testing series has been started, which, however, is preferably avoided in practice. Although various simulated programmes for the inventory of thermal conditions in the tool are, used, there are also various techniques, including thermovision. The paper states the results of inventory of thermal conditions in the die casting tool by means of thermovision.
