Abstract

This article treats the use of Rayleigh waves for ultrasonic examination of an aluminium specimen. The critical angle causing Rayleigh waves in an aluminium block is calculated. An adequate ultrasonic search unit was constructed and used. Tests on undersurface bore holes in different distances from the surface were performed, to determine the maximum distance of the defect from the surface to which the Rayleigh waves give recognizable echoes.
