Abstract

During the construction of a refinery in the Rotterdam area, AEA Sonomatic has used the Time of Flight Diffraction (TOFD) technique on a large scale as an alternative to radiograhy. The use of the technique resulted in major cost savings and increased confidence in the end-product. A recent completed project of the Netherlands Welding Institute (NIL) is introduced. Due to the good results it was decided to use TOFD not only as the base-line survey for the HP piping welds, but as the primary inspection method during construction work as an alternative to radiography. One major problem was the establishment of acceptance criteria. Major advantages are described, e.g. fast and cheap. AEA sonomatic holds a formal approval for the use of TOFD on piping welds in nuclear power stations. For another application the technique was Lloyds-approved.
