ABSTRACT

Beam modelling software is used to generate B-scans simulating several commonly used contact angle beam transducers. Analysis of amplitude with respect to exit point is carried out for each model using data points from depths corresponding to side drilled holes in an IOW block (British Standards A5). Graphed and tabulated results are analysed for trends. This modelling analysis is then compared to actual lab results for refracted angle determination. Good correlation is seen.

Frederick H.C. Hotchkiss is product manager for Ultrasonic Transducer Products, Nondestructive Testing Division, Panametrics Inc. in Waltham, Massachusettes, USA. He received a B.Sc. from MIT in 1966, M.Phil. and Ph.D. from Yale in 1972 and 1974 respectively. He was a postdoctoral fellow at the Smithsonian Institution in 1975.
