The aim of this study is to investigate the correlations between physical properties (ultrasonic wave velocity
and electrical conductivity) and mechanical properties (hardness and impact toughness) in age hardened
2024 (Al-Cu-Mg) aluminium alloys. By this way, it would be possible to develop a non-destructive
evaluation method appropriate for examination and control of age hardening of aluminium alloys. The
specimens were solution heat treated, and then, artificially aged for different aging times. Propagation
velocities of longitudinal and shear waves were measured by ultrasonic pulse-echo technique, and electrical
conductivities were measured by eddy current technique. Hardness and Charpy impact tests were also
performed. A direct relationship between electrical conductivity, hardness and impact toughness was
observed. Similar relationship was also obtained between sound velocity, hardness and impact toughness,
however, it is rough compared to the electrical conductivity.
