This paper presents reflection and transmission guided wave factors for planar crack
detection in an arbitrary cross-section. For a rail, which has an arbitrary cross-section, the
vertical crack is the most hazardous defect. The scattering from various types and sizes of
defects including the transverse vertical crack are numerically calculated. The Semi-
Analytical Finite Element Computational Method (SAFE) is utilized in characterizing the
defects. Initial modeling data is provided for feasibility. The results of this study could help
establish guidelines for predicting the size of a defect in an arbitrary cross-section. Some
preliminary experiments with an EMAT sensor are also presented.
