Nowadays the wood based panels are destined to different uses like: furniture, construction, transport. The
products market derived from wood panels industry represents a remarkable percentage of increasing wood
consumption in Europe.
At the present time, grading wood based panels is done by the European Standard 789, which determines,
the physical-mechanical characteristics of small percentage of manufactured board. These results are used to
calculate the physical-mechanical characteristics that later will be assigned to all the production. The aim of
this work was to find a fiable non-destructive method to evaluate the wood based panels strength that could
be applicable in the industry. This study focused in three kinds of panels.
This paper discusses the result of the uses of the dynamic methods for the evaluation of structural panels and
for the determination its structural performance. The investigations dealt with the ultrasonic method were in
two frequencies 30 KHz and 150 KHz, and the method of transverse and longitudinal vibration using
different principles. The usability of these methods was verified with structural dimension samples.
Different individual and mixed regression equations were established for estimate the strength of the
different panels, using the modulus of elasticity of the static bending test according to the European
StandardEN-789, as a predictor variable.
Around the 70 % and 85% of the variation of the strength could be explained through those models. In this
paper we shown how we could use the different NDT applicable to the wood panels industry, its modelling
and possible simulation for the industry application in order to grading the wood based panels.
