The existing X-ray inspection systems are quite often not economical in operation and the good/bad decision depends on the operators performance. However, based on experience the human reliability of defect recognition is only 70 - 80%.
The solution of today is a completely automatic inspection system. Such a system consists of PLC-controlled specimen handling, high stability constant potential X-ray system, image intensifier and computerized image analysis and interpretation. Software algorithms are available for a number of applications like aluminium wheels, axle bodies, and suspension parts. Practical applications and customized solutions will be presented in this paper.
