We have developed a special 5 MHz shear wave probe. The usage of this probe is very simple. As long as it is put on a conventional and common ultrasonic flaw detector to test flat metal parts, such as plates, discs, and rings etc, Whose thickness are equal to or less than 40 mm, any existing artificial defects, such as crack, columned hole (or called passage hole), side-drilled hole (SDH), flat-bottomed hole (FBH) etc. can be adopted and there exists no dead zone. That is why this special shear wave probe is called "universal ultrasonic probe for no upside-dead zone".
In this paper, a technique of ultrasonic testing for no upside- dead zone is introduced, that is to say, the working principles, properties and characteristics of the universal ultrasonic probe for no upside-dead zone and its wide applications are introduced. Our ultrasonic testing practice has fully proved that this ultrasonic testing technique for no upside-dead zone is an ideal method to solve ultrasonic testing for no upside-dead zone and that this technique has very great use value.
