Various types of NDT methods have been evolved and also standardized based on criticality of components. The quality requirements may be less stringent for automobiles which run on road, where as similar standards cannot be applied to aerospace applications for obvious reasons. The it becomes all the more necessary to evolve NDT techniques which are more effective and sensitive to detect a minute defects in components, the defects which are considered harmful for the life of components and in turn safety of aircraft.
Keeping in view of the above considerations, engine division has adopted several NDT techniques to detect acceptable and also unacceptable both surface and internal defects in aeroengine components welded, brazed, formed including forgings. Some critical components undergo more than one NDT methods for obvious reasons.
Engine division presently dealing with following NDT methods viz. MPI, FPI, X-ray, Eddy current inspection, Ultrasonic inspection both contact and immersion methods with C-scan facility in addition to normal etching, anodizing and Binocular examination.
The more emphasis has been given in this paper on Ultrasonic inspection by immersion method with C-scan facility for testing of forgings, brazed assemblies and Carburised Gear Case-Core separation of Bull gear of Garrett. It is unique quality requirement of M/S. Allied Signal, USA. The paper deals with the detail method of quantifying the unbrazed areas of brazed components with specific examples and also case-core separation check on Bull gear.
The paper also briefly explains the equipment used for the above purposes which has been developed indigenously first time in the country by M/S. Vivacesonics (P) Ltd., Hyderabad. It has saved considerable foreign exchange. Using the indigenously developed equipment exportcommitment from the company has been fulfilled. A brief description and application of other NDT methods are also explained, in particular, usage of Rod Anode X-ray machine for panoramic view of welded circular components including EB welded assemblies and Epitechnoscope inspection of welds underbeads of HP compressor drum of Adour Jet engine powering Jaguar aircraft.
