Spiral Weld Pipe Plant (SWPP) of Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) is manufacturing about 50, 000 tones of Submerged Arc Welded Spiral Weld Steel Pipes per annum of various grades, to cater to the needs of Water, Oil and Gas sectors in India and abroad. These pipes are made from hot rolled coils of IS 3589 grade steel and API grade steels. The diameter of pipes varies from 406.0 mm to 1625.0 mm and thickness varies from 6.4 mm to 12.0 mm. These pipes are required to be tested non-destructively to detect, locate and characterise defects in weld as well as parent material for the conformance to the applicable specifications. This paper describes, in detail, about application of various non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques, particularly, ultrasonic testing and X-ray radiography on the spiral weld pipes. This paper also gives an account of experiences gained in the field of application of these NDT techniques and future plan for augmentation of the same to fulfil the ever increasing stringent quality requirements of the pipe customers.
