DEPTH OF WELD DEFECTS USING AN INGENIOUS GADGET IN RADIOGRAPHY

ABSTRACT Radiography is used as one of the NDT techniques for about a century in ascertaining the welding defects of engineering materials and assemblies. It is difficult to determine the depth of defect in welding unless the geometry of work piece is simple and permit the radiography at mutually perpendicular faces. Radiography gives image in single plane, as such measurement of the depth of welding defect in simple radiograph is ruled out. Theoretically image shift method or double exposure technique is advocated. But very small thin defects like slag inclusion, non- fusion and cracks etc. in thick welded portion get lost/distorted and thereby making this method ineffective. This paper deals with the method of determining the depth of welding defects specially in thick welded portions. The method utilises a gadget which helps during rectification of welding defects in thick welded components. Geometrical fundamentals are used in making this gadget. This method is successfully employed in assessing the quality of intricate welds in "Undercarriage strut" of MiG series Aircrafts.
