Among non-destructive techniques neutron analysis and gamma activation analysis are very versatile techniques and have got wide range of applications. Most of these applications are directed towards obtaining exact information on element and isotope traces present in a given composition. A straight forward method of neutron activation analysis using thermal neutrons and employing absolute gamma counting technique is illustrated with examples of applications to estimate silver in old rupee coins and the results observed in our laboratory. Different methods of obtaining neutrons from relativistic electrons using microtron needed for neutron activation analysis are analysed. The relative advantages of microtron and other electron accelerators for neutron activation analyses compared to reactors as neutron sources are also discussed. The suitability of microtron for gamma activation analysis using bremsstrahlung radiation is also discussed.
