It may be needed that a particular weld has to be subjected to weld repairs more than two or even three times. The repeated weld repair affects the structure of weldment to a great degree due to the repeated heating and cooling of the weldment and these structural changes may hinder both performance of ultrasonic examination on them and interpretation of the test results. A study has been undertaken to evaluate the effects of multiple repairs on austenitic stainless steel weldments, for the successful ultrasonic examination. The test welds have been subjected to repeated welding cycles and the ultrasonic parameters including the defect characterisation have been evaluated for analysis. The paper discusses the approach followed, detailed analysis of the same and proposes recommendations based on the study.
