The dynamic modulus of elasticity of timber scantlings of different sizes and species were determined instantaneously in the longitudinal mode of vibration using a microprocessor based elasto sonic equipment developed for the first time in India. Tests were also carried out to determine the static modulus of elasticity and the results were analysed. A fairly good correlation exists between the dynamic and static modulus of elasticity. As the equipment is easily portable unlike stress grading machine, constructional timbers can be easily sorted and graded by this elasto sonic method at site.
