A fully automatic real-time X-ray inspection concept is presented with focus on the control and image processing systems. A functional description of each of the control sub-systems is provided and the overall software architecture is presented. Two different realizations will be exemplified, one based on a conventional multi-pc system and one on a VME-bus based computer system.

Special attention is given to the image processing software that is based on the application of neural networks. The image processing software has a graphical user interface that is presented together with the main functionalities. The realization of the neural network using a parallel multi processor architecture plugged in a host pc is shortly described.
