In this paper, we used a mean value premise in which each irregular pore is replaced by a spheroid having the same volume and surface area as that of the original pore. The mean value of aspect ratio of these pores is estimated from the two-dimensional microstructure using stereological relations. This aspect ratio is then used to calculate variation of ultrasonic velocity with porosity, in different materials using the self consistent oblate spheroidal inclusion theory. The model is compared with the results on different ceramic and metallic materials. The validity of using a linear relation for variation of ultrasonic velocity with porosity is also discussed.
