But the practical use of EMATs is limited because of equipment costs and minor accuracy of measurement results due to poor signal characteristics compared with established techniques based on piezo-electric transducers.
A new EMAT instrument for wall-thickness measurement is presented. Special emphasis was put on the design of the transducer and the preamplifier to get precise data of high resolution.
The transmitter design is open for later use of coded signals to reduce the necessary high current and to improve the resolution for specific inspection problems.
This new transmitter technique reduces the weight and the costs of EMAT equipment which will become comparable to standard instruments but offering the mentioned advantages.
