Evaluation of Lengthwise Variation of Mechanical Properties by Ultrasounds

ABSTRACT This paper outlines a research project which ultimate objective is the prediction of the lengthwise variation of mechanical properties (modulus of elasticity and bending strength) of Maritime pine timber by analyzing ultrasound propagation perpendicular to the grain on different locations of the board. The paper presents a description of the equipment used and the test procedures followed as well as some preliminary results, namely the influence of density and of different defects on the velocity and attenuation of the ultrasound waves. A discussion about some aspects regarding future work is also presented.
