Application of Ultrasound Technique to Assess Wood Quality in Standardized Logs of Norway Spruce at The Mill Site
Lutz G. Müller
ABSTRACT (DISCUSSION) Longitudinal measurements through the pith of small sized wood of Norway spruce with an ultrasound measurement device resulted in useful and simple hints for presorting. The results, however, must ve verified taking into accound more rigidly moisture content and outdoor temperature [2]. The investigation will also be continued by trying to follow the further production line by transponders. Substituting the determination of dry density by ring width evaluation could lead to a practical method for presorting timber before it is cut into pieces at bearable costs. Shortcomings of this investigation stem from the necessarily more of less unconditioned setup as well as inherent technical problems of acoustic coupling, resolution, response speed and equipment configuration.
