Application of Ultrasonic Based Methods for the Assessment of the Elastic Modulus of Old Oak Beams
Manuela Mattone
ABSTRACT Within the framework of an investigation aimed at defining the testing equipment and methodology for the evaluation of the state of preservation of timber structures of special historical-architectural interest, a testing program was conducted on beams of oak - a material widely used in structural applications in Piedmont - taken from slabs and roofs of historical buildings located in Avigliana (Turin).
The tests made use of a special instrument - Sylvatest - to measure the velocity of propagation of ultrasonic waves through the elements tested. Its use proved valuable, as this instrument can supply data on the mechanical properties of the timber through inplace testing procedures.
