Vibro-Acoustical Studies on Logs of Wood
Djamel Ouis
ABSTRACT This paper presents the results of some vibrational and acoustical experiments conducted on logs of spruce. The aim from this study was in the begining to study the possibilities of acoustically investigating decay presence in the stem of standing trees and for assessing the strength of wood logs. The experiments am based on the analysis of the vibrations in the wood logs and on the sound emitted from them as resulting from a mechanical excitation. As a result, a new type of modes of vibration is found to contribute to the sound radiated from the logs and some amplitude modulation is found in their vibrational impulse responses These two characteristics may be used at some advantage for detecting the presence of decay in the logs of wood.
