ABSTRACT
The mechanical behavior of spruce (clear wood or structural wood based composites -glulam and LVL- ) has been studied in various situations (bending, tension, compression) up to failure; the progressive process by which those materials break has been observed by different non destructive tests (observation, vibrations, ultrasonics, acoustic emission) associated to the classical stress-strain curve determination. In compression, diffused, microductile damage, is always clearly observed, described and modelled; in tension, parallel or transverse to the grain, damage is micro-brittle and localized and therefore it is difficult to analyse it; acoustic emission seems the best experimental approach.
