Process Control with NDT Methods in Panel Production
K. Kruse BFH, Institute of Wood Physics and Mechanical Wood Technology
ABSTRACT
Wood based panels have to fulfil requirements as specified in standards and by customers. Therefore the production of wood based panels has to be controlled using statistical process control (SPC) methods which is basically realised by on-line sensing for process control and panel sampling for quality control. The new European standard for process control in wood based panel manufacturing (EN 326) approves the alternative implementation of NDT methods instead of destructive test methods. NDT methods for quality control offer significant advantages (e.g. quick and continuos monitoring of panel quality). Considering individual conditions for different products implementation of NDT methods allows a more precise quality control and can be used for reduced safety margins.
The paper will cover:
System of quality control in the wood based panel industry including the new version of EN 326
Basic statistical background (frequency of testing, prediction of panel properties)
New techniques for immediate testing of hot panels directly after hot pressing (IB, MOE, MOR)
Implementation of NDT methods in Process Control procedures
Results of trails in industry
