We have constructed a garden pavilion, standing on 6 legs. Each leg supports 3 points of a wooden dome, The height of the legs are 2,2 m The dome is a spherical section with radius of 5,7m, height is 3 in. The structure is a triangle truss., see figure 1. Length of the beams are not uniform: 1,3 - 1,5 in. The cross-section of the beams are: 4*9 cm only, Number of beams are 156. High strength (C40 - C30) Siberian ]arch was used supplied by ERDERT saw mill in Tuzser, The material was graded by the DYNAMOE lumber grader, see figure 2.
One joint connects 6 beams. Because the small cross-section, we have developed a metal joint specially :for our structure. Each accommodates two metal plates, fixed by 6 dowels, diameter of 8mm each. Six metal plate connect to a metal ring. (Figure 3) The dome is covered by 18 thick OSB panel and light tile.
The dome project was completed just before the 12th international Symposium on Nondestructive Testing of Wood and we selected the dome as a symbol of the symposium. We believe that architects and civil engineers will use strength graded lumber in the future in Hungary.
The project was supported by the Ministry of Agriculture, Budapest, BALATON furniture factory. Veszprem and ERDERT saw-mill (the biggest in Hungary), Tuzser.
