Acceptance of pulsed thermography for inspection applications in the aerospace and energy industries has increased dramatically in the past few years. The relative speed, wide area coverage and non-contact nature of the method make it an attractive alternative to conventional inspection technologies. However, the process of inspecting a large structure, such as an aircraft control surface, can be challenging, since it involves collecting a series of image sequences, each comprising several hundred images, and analyzing each sequence individually. After each sequence is analyzed, the result may then be pasted into a mosaic representing the complete target area. We have developed a method that significantly reduces the time required to inspect large areas, which also increases the signal to noise content of the image sequence, and reduces the size of the corresponding data structure by an order of magnitude. By extracting a synthetic sequence from the raw data, we are able to visualize the data for the entire area, and display the time evolution of the complete part, as well as time derivatives and a map displaying the calibrated depth of all subsurface features. Examples using actual aircraft structures will be presented.
