Laser generated ultrasound has been applied to the nondestructive evaluation of materials, such as quality assurance of thin composite plates, evaluation of elastic constants and defects of composite structures. In this paper, the dispersion behavior of laser induced elastic waves in a unidirectional fiber reinforced composite and a layered composite structure are discussed. On combining with an inverse optimization algorithm, we utilize the laser ultrasonics to evaluate the elastic properties of composite structures. Two applications are included, the first is the measurement of the anisotropic elastic constants of a unidirectional fiber reinforced composite by using the point source-point receiver method (broadband generation), and the second is the determination of the bonding properties of a bonded layered structure using the laser induced grating method (narrowband generation).
