As Chairman of the Board of Directors of the American Society for Nondestructive Testing and Director of the Johns Hopkins University Center for Nondestructive Evaluation, I am most pleased to participate in the 15th World Congress on Nondestructive Testing in Rome, Italy. Nondestructive testing is undoubtedly one of the world's most important professions. Everything ages with time and becomes less capable of performing its initially intended function. Since I have worked for over 40 years in the Engineering School at Johns Hopkins University, one of the world's most prominent medical institutions, I personally realize that our profession is as important, or perhaps even more important, than the medical one. A medical doctor normally saves one human life at a time. Through our NDT efforts we save many, many lives daily. It is extremely important to have international conferences between individuals from different countries, with different ethnic backgrounds, economic levels, and lifestyles because a technical subject like nondestructive testing brings us together and shows that we all have common interests. Moreover, no one country or person is a leader in every technical discipline, but each of us contributes to the good of the common whole. I can think of no other field that embraces such a wide depth and breadth of technical knowledge ranging from basic research to the most demanding practical field inspection. It is at international conferences that we meet old friends, make new ones, and exchange very important information that helps all of us do our job better in the future. The more we communicate and share ideas the better we understand each other and improve international relations. I encourage you to make the most of this opportunity to meet with NDT professionals from other countries, to get to know them, and to continue to help make the world safer for all of us. This 15th World Congress on Nondestructive Testing in Rome, with the venue in a city of incomparable beauty and historical significance, will undoubtedly go down in history as one of the most outstanding congresses we have ever had. I am extremely pleased that my family and American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT) friends from the United States are here to participate and enjoy. On their behalf, I would like to extend thanks and best wishes to everyone in the Italian Society for Nondestructive Testing for their very hard work and dedication in making such a memorable event.
