DGZfP INFORMATION SERVICES - A PLATFORM FOR STANDARDIZATION AND PUBLICATION ENQUIRY H. Heidt1, H. Wessel2 1 BAM Berlin, Germany; 2 DGZfP Berlin, Germany Abstract: Information is probably the most important resource for successful development and application in modern technology. In the field of NDT, it is the task of NDT societies to supply their members with up-to-date, always and everywhere available information about standards, new (and old) publications and general business news. DGZfP as a non-profit technical-scientifical society has developed an electronic platform to provide their members with all publicly available information, including modern search functions and fast literature delivery. Introduction: The DGZfP is a non-profit-making technical and scientific society and a member of the German Federation of Technical and Scientific Associations (DVT). According to the Statutes and articles of the society, it is the goal of the DGZfP "to promote research, development and applications in NDT and to propagate non-destructive testing techniques". Main activities of the DGZfP are as follows: Information and communication on
The DGZfP represents its members and their interests in co-operation with:
In order to co-ordinate the scope of the above mentioned tasks, the DGZfP, in addition to membership in the
DVT, is a member of the following societies:
DGZfP's Publication and Information Centre The Society's main source of information is the DGZfP journal, which currently is published five times a year. Besides information around the society, its members' activities, products and personal news, the "ZfP-Zeitung" covers technical information and papers on NDT and related topics. It also includes an updated calendar of forthcoming national and international NDT events. The subscription price for the journal is included in the DGZfP membership fee. Proceedings of most conferences and seminars are published or printed on CD ROM, with more than 50 titles to date. As already mentioned, the DGZfP offers guidelines, notes and recommendations prepared by its technical committees. Along with BAM (Federal Institute of Materials Research and Testing), DVM (German Society for Materials Technology), and VDI (Association of German Engineers) the DGZfP is co-editor of the journal Materialprüfung (Material Testing). Together with the BAM and the Centre for Technical Information (FIZ), the DGZfP is co-editor and distributor of the 44-year-old NDT Literature Documentation Service. Approximately 1400 to 1600 abstracts of papers related to NDT are published annually in 12 issues. This is available as a printed journal or as a PC diskette. A collection of 10 years literature documentation is collected on CD ROM. Literature searches in up to 200 databases will be performed for special information from case to case or on a regular basis. Finally, search for relevant literature titles in the combined database of Welding, Casting and NDT is made available on the DGZfP home page (www.dgzfp.de) free of charge (see picture below). Presently, more than 450.000 references are accessible through this network. For the user this has the advantage, that he will be aware of nearly all published specifications on a subject, not only standards. At the moment, this tool is centered on German regulations; if there is sufficient interest, it could be expanded to additional, international specifications. In 2003, the information platform was used more than 1000 times, more than 100 new users were registered and approx. 100 literature requests were delivered immediately. This shows that this sort of information platform is really needed by NDT experts in their daily work! Further information under www.dgzfp.de/iz . |
