Introduction and Background

Weld and corrosion related defects in materials cost billions of dollars each year, and can also cause catastrophic failures which will result in serious injuries and loss of lives. The inability of detecting defects in materials due to lack of techniques and/or availability of appropriate equipment has been felt in many and diverse industries, especially in Oil and Gas, and Petrochemical industries. Due to its wide operating temperature ranges, high humidity, corrosive atmosphere, and high sulfur oil and gas products in some areas, the Middle East and largely the Arabian Gulf area experience various types of corrosion related problems. When taken in the context of the magnitude of the Gulf’s oil production facilities and industry, the result is intense interest in defects detection, sizing, identifying and classifying, preferably through nondestructive testing . Because of the broad approach necessary to resolve problems involving corrosion related defects, this symposia will present a diversity of papers covering a wide range of Non Destructive Testing Techniques (NDT) and related topics. The First Middle East Nondestructive Testing Conference is organized by the Bahrain Society of Engineers and the ASNT-Saudi Arabian Section. The conference and exhibition will be held over three days, September 24, 25 and 26, 2001.

The theme for this conference is Nondestructive Testing Technologies for Improving Safety and Reliability of the Oil and Petrochemical Industries. This theme reflects the many challenges faced by the nondestructive testing professionals. It also will focus on the latest methodology, techniques, certifications, training and equipment. The organizers of the conference wish to emphasize the role of existing and new NDT technologies in the Oil and Petrochemical industries.

Call for Papers

Papers are invited from practicing engineers, research scientists and NDT professionals and experts. The Author should submit an abstract on the enclosed form for consideration by the Organizing Committee. The abstract should be no more than 400 words and should state clearly the objectives, subject matter and conclusions to be presented in the full paper.

Conference Language

The official Conference language will be English. Papers, visual materials, and other documents will be presented in the English language.

Exhibition

Concurrently with the conference, an exhibition will be held within the conference venue. The exhibition is intended to provide an opportunity for companies, consultancy and research organisations to display and demonstrate their activities and services. The exhibition stands size are 3m wide and 2 m deep with 2.5 meter height. Stand fittings will consists of one Octanorm systems stand, two flourscent lights, fascia board in English, one power point, sufficient tables and chairs. Short Courses

Short courses will be offered for an additional cost by specialist companies in conjunction with the conference. The short course topics will be announced in our next mailing. Any company wishing to propose a course, should contact the Bahrain Society of Engineers.

Conference Venue

The conference and exhibition will be held at the Gulf International Convention Center at the Gulf Hotel, Manama, Bahrain. The hotel provides a choice of five star accommodations in the Tower or four-star accommodation in the comfortable South Wing. An executive floor and suites are also available. About the Organizers

American Society for NonDestructive Testing-Saudi Arabian Section (ASNT-SAS)
The Saudi Arabian Section of ASNT was founded in 1999. Since then, the Section has been very actively organizing and supporting the NDT profession and enhancing its credibility. The section offered several courses in various methods of NDT. Monthly dinner meetings have been held where various NDT topics and concerns have been enthusiastically discussed with keen interest. The Saudi Arabian Section’s impressive high activity has already earned it a ranking as the only international section of ASNT in the top 15 standings for the ASNT President’s Award. This was achieved within a year of receiving its charter from ASNT.

The Bahrain Society of Engineers (BSE)
Established in 1972, BSE is a non-profit professional organization for engineers from all disciplines. The primary objective of BSE is to enhance the standard of the engineering profession through activities such as research, conferences, seminars, courses, lectures, and through consultations with statutory bodies and major employers on matters related to engineering. BSE is represented on several committees set up by the Bahraini Government to deal with engineering-related matters.
