UT & NDT Applications in Power Generation
- Links to documents on NDTnet were listed also, but the themes of this links were more or less general applicable like 'UT of welding' which is of course is a big task in the Power Generation industry. But for that we will provide an extra focus with a future NDTnet issue. (NDTnet 12/97 Focus on Power Generation) .
- EPRI: New Guidelines for Evaluating Seam-Welded Piping
- Recently EPRI issued new guidelines for evaluating the integrity of seam-welded high-energy piping in fossil plants, expanding on
- guidelines produced in 1987. The original guidelines, developed in response to two catastrophic weld ruptures in 1985 and 1986, had
- seam-welded piping. The review indicated that these incidents might have been prevented had EPRI evaluation procedures been strictly
- used to inspect weld H8 and to develop an effective method to locate the segment welds of the top guide support ring. Ultrasonic inspections are volumetric examinations used to detect flaws and determine their size. Accessibility of the weld determines which
- While acoustic emission testing is a good method for screening hot reheat piping for cracks, utilities will continue to use ultrasonic inspections for in-depth examinations. Ever since EPRI's Guidelines for the Evaluation of Seam-Welded Steam Pipes (CS-4774) was published in 1987, many electric utilities have followed that report when conducting ultrasonic examinations of high-energy piping in fossil-fired power plants. Now updated draft guidelines that incorporate recent EPRI research results are available to Fossil Power Plants Business Unit members.
- [12/97] Typical crack locations in seam-welded piping. EPRI analysis indicates that in hot reheat (HRH) piping, damage begins almost exclusively near weld cusps and grows gradually as cracking along the weld fusion line (see photo). The high-sensitivity ultrasonic inspection techniques specified by EPRI can detect this type of damage years before major cracking, leaking, or rupture might occur. In main steam link (MSL) piping, which is thicker, damage occurs over a wider area, and cracking is thus much less predictable.
