Dr. Jones was born, raised and educated in Baltimore, Maryland. He received his baccalaureate degree in Physics from the University of Maryland and masters and doctoral degrees in Materials Science and Engineering from the Johns Hopkins University. While in graduate school, he was employed as a materials engineer at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in Gaithersburg, Maryland. His main areas of interest at NIST were acoustic emission, ultrasound, and thermal wave imaging. He later worked for eight years at the Aluminum Company of America (ALCOA) as a Senior Engineer in nondestructive evaluation of various metals, ceramics, and composites. He is currently a Senior Engineer for the NDE Technical Team of the Edison Welding Institute where he works on a wide range of joining problems from kissing bonds in adhesives to microcracking in laser welds.
In February of 1995, Dr. Jones began the process of creating a Usenet newsgroup for nondestructive testing. In July of 1995, the sci.techniques.testing.nondestructive newsgroup was created, along with sci.techniques.testing.misc. From the continued success of the NDT newsgroup, he realized the potential value of the Internet to the materials testing scientists and engineers world-wide. In November of 1995, he established a nonprofit corporation, known as Materials Testing Internet Resources, whose primary purpose is to promote the use of the Internet and other electronic communications media for the advancement of the science and education of materials testing. Dr. Jones has also created two joining newsgroups: sci.engr.joining.welding and sci.engr.joining.misc.
