Limiting Factors for Crack Detection by Ultrasonic Investigation | For the ultrasonic methods the limiting influences on the crack detectability will be discussed considering three different aspects: 1. Acceptability requirements for cracks, 2. Physical interactions used for the detection, 3. Geometrical and physical properties of the crack. The examples of the precedent chapters have shown that much is depending on the geometrical situation of the crack (close to the surface or surface breaking or within the volume), on its orientation and also on the shape of the crack conture. The conture influences are especially of interest in cases of the application of TOFD approaches or approaches where the diffracted energy is mainly used for the detection. H. Wüstenberg, A. UT Mechanised Ultrasonic Inspection of Offshore Platform Structures | Laboratory techniques verified on customer mock-ups were used to phase out use of radiography. Further requirements to satisfy the customer's concerns involved site trials. Therefore, several hundred welds tested by mechanised UT were compared with radiography. It was seen that all significant defects found using radiography were also detected using mechanised UT. It was concluded that mechanised ultrasonics was an effective replacement for radiography and offered a comparable confidence level in probability of detection of all significant defects. E. ECT Validating Eddy Current Array Probes for
Inspecting Steam Generator Tubes | A CANDU nuclear reactor was shut down for over one year because steam generator (SG) tubes had failed with outer diameter stress corrosion cracking (ODSCC) in the U-bend section. Novel, single-pass eddy current transmit-receive probes were successful in detecting all significant cracks so that the cracked tubes could be plugged and the unit restarted. Methods are presented for calculating POD curves based on signal-to-noise studies using field data. Results of eddy current scans of tubes with laboratory-induced ODSCC are presented with associated POD curves. These studies appear promising in predicting realistic POD curves for new inspection technologies. They are being used to qualify an improved eddy current array probe in preparation for field use.
