Abstract : The aim of the project is the development of equipment allowing the determination, by non-destructive testing (NDT) in metals and composite materials, of mechanical properties and defects, such as: elastic moduli, fracture toughness, hardness, impact strength, cracks, inclusions, voids, delaminations, etc. The equipment is based on an ultrasound broadcaster/receptor connected to a signal acquisition board installed on a PC. The probe used implies the existence of a flat surface in the material.
This project includes the development of a data acquisition and processing system. Thus, the signals are analyzed in the frequency domain in order to establish classification methods for the different goals (correlation of signals and empirical relations for properties estimation). This requires the development of some algorithms for parameter characterization and classification (neural networks). This technique has the benefit of simplicity and quality of results with wide rejection criteria.
