The sistematic convocation of the scientific-technical conferences specializing in methodic of ultrasonic NDT in St.-Petersburg is the tradition founded by the Bridge Research Institute of Petersburg State University of Railroad in 1962.
Present conference was organized by the Bridge Research Institute in co-operation with the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM, Germany) and ABB AMDATA (USA), supported by the Scientific Council on "Phisical methods of Nondestructive testing and Technical Diagnostics" of Russian Academy of Science; St.-Petersburg Branch of Russian Society for Nondestructive Testing and Technical Diagnostics; Belorussian Assotiation on Nondestructive Testing and Technical Diagnostics. Chairman of Organizing Committee - Professor, Dr.Sci. G.Ya.Dymkin.
The sponsors rendered impotent help in organizing of the Conference. These were firms developing and producing equipments for ultrasonic nondestructive testing: "ZOND" (St.-Petersburg), "Polytest" (Moscow), "Expert-Centre" NIKIMT (Moscow), "TVEMA" (Moscow) and the enterprise NTMK (Nizhny Tagil).
The technical program of UTM-98 included plenary, section and poster session and also the exhibition of newest equipments in the field of ultrasonic testing of metal constructions. The Conference drew a total of 126 experts who represented 43 research and disign institutions, universities, industry and transport enterprises from 8 countries of Europe, Asia and the United States.
A total of present papers was separated by Program Committee (Chairman - Prof.Dr.Sci. A.K.Gurvich) by 6 trends according to the main topics of the Conference:
The Conference UTM-98 was dedicated to member-corr. Of the Russian Academy of Science S.Y.Sokolov because 70 years ago he discovered of principles and phisical basis of ultrasonic nondestructive testing. In this connection the Conference was opened by survey paper "70 years of ultrasonic NDT" (S.K.Pavros, SPGETU).
The following papers attracted conference participations the most attention: "Human factor in ultrasonic testing reliability problem" (A.S.Korobtsov, V.F.Lukjanov, DGTU) and "Professionaly important qualities of UT-personnel and their diagnostic methods". (L.V.Vinokurov, A.A.Otjugov, PSUR). These papers were dedicated to consider of reliability factors and professionaly-psychological characters of UT-personnel and also methods of them selection (assortment). The papers "Acoustical computer holography is effective mathod of ultrasonic testing of austenitic welds" (V.V.Grebennikov, B.G.Badalyan, A.H.Vopilkin, D.V.Grebennikov, Echo+) and "New developments in ultrasonic testing" (W.Roye, Krautrkr(mer GmbH) examined a new possibilities of computerizire equipments of nondestructive testing for realization of hindraceprotection increasing principles to be (which were) developed before and ultrasonic testing result documentation. The original presentation "The koaxial waves use for fixing responsible objects diagnostic results reliability increase" ( V.T.Vlasov, B.N.Marin, Algorytm) shown the possibility of using of interacting modes of axis symmetrical normal waves for the diagnostic of pivot and pipe constructions. The information "State and conception of development of metrology, standardization and certification in the field of NDT" (N.P.Muravskaya, VNIIOPhI) was very intresting also.
The papers covered the areas of ultrasonic testing practical tehnologies of metalsheet, pipelines, nuclear and warm power plant, welds, cut junctions, consrtuctions of rail and roling stock of railway transport.
17 companies took part in the exhibition UTM-98. They represented a newest development of instruments, auxiliary devices and software for ultrasonic testing. The distinctive peculiarity of the ehxibition was a big number of new microprocessored instruments and testing systems realizing of original methodic ideas. The number of apparatus have been sertificated by Gosstandard of Russia. They are: the ultrasonic device SKARUTCH (Altes-Ltd) intended for ultrasonic nondestructive testing of welds and metal of construction and pipelines with thickness 4(50 mm with manual scanning; specialized ultrasonic flaw detector UDS2-32 (Bridge Research Institute) for testing of wheelsets and welds of railway rolling stocks, specialized ultrasonic flaw detectors from series RDM (NPP RDM) for welded rails testing .
During the Conference the pilot presentation of the journal "NDT World" was held.
The next 17th St.-Petersburg International Conference specializing in ultrasonic nondestructive testing of metal construction will be held in 2001.
