The Edge of Light NDT Technique: Towards Quantitative Enhanced Visual NDT
Edge of LightTM is a new enhanced visual NDT technique developed by the Institute for Aerospace Research, National Research Council Canada. This technique enhances minute details of surface topography, which has many applications in NDT and other fields.
The EOL technique has been evaluated in a number of NDT applications, including the detection of fatigue cracks in turbine disks, cracks in aluminum aircraft structures, and pillowing caused by corrosion in multi-layer aircraft structures. The technique is also being evaluated in applications where surface roughness and texture are critical.
To improve the reliability of EOL and other methods, IAR has developed the Solid-HiTM technique of using a solid film highlighter to provide constant reflectivity for optically-based NDT. The Solid-Hi technology is now being used with the EOL technique and IAR's NDI Analysis software to develop quantitative enhanced visual NDT systems.
