R/D Tech: Eddy Current Array Probe
The new Eddy Current industrial Inspection system, TC5700 MC, offered by R/D Tech is currently in use at several production, facilities. This equipment, developed to replace currently used rotating heads and encircling probes has a revolutionary design. The eddy
current array probe instrument allows the use of a large number of
separate elements which, arranged circumferentially around a tube,
bar, or any other geometrically complex Product (hexagon, square), will generate a revolving magnetic field on the part to be inspected. Therefore, defects, may easily be detected, whether the defect is short or long, transverse or longitudinal. Some users have
applied the technology to detect defects at depths as shallow as 40 µm in their products.
This new technology, in addition to improvement in defect detection, may also eliminate many problems related to rotating mechanical devices, as the multi element array probe uses electronics, to simulate rotation, thereby eliminating the requirement for complex mechanical rotation.
The C-scan display considerably simplifies the analysis of inspected parts and "go/no-go" reject criteria are easily implemented. Inspections may become faster (it is in fact possiple to generate a revolving field equivalent to 300,000 mechanical revolutions per minute and more reliable.
Applications expected to be enhanced by this new technolog include manufacturing of tubing, bar (of all shapes), sheet, and metallic wire. However, flexibility in probe design will allow use in a number of additional applications.
