lifetime management
Record Control Number : 35431
Quality Validation Date : 2000-04-25
Update Date : 2000-04-25
Project Acronym : LIMATOG
Title : Lifetime management of transit oil and gas pipelines in CCE/NlS cou
ntries : Development of knowledge based multimedia software for
lifetime managem ent
Subject Index Code : Coordination, Cooperation, Legislation, Regulations, Policies
Other Indexes : Oil and gas pipelines, lifetime management, knowledge-based
multimedia software, brittle fracture, corrosion, fatigue,
non-destructive testing
General Information : Failures found in transit oil and gas pipelines pose major safety,
economic and environmental problems and accordingly require
reliable accident prevention, repair and maintenance procedures.
These issues have received inadequate attention in CCE/NIS
countries, though two of the partners, Hungarian Oil and Gas Co.
and Transneftediagnostika currently operate separate Knowledge
Based Systems (KBS) in Hungary, Belarus, Ukraine and Russia to
monitor and manage the large (610 - 1230 mm diameter) pipelines.
The development of an advanced multilingual KBS for pipeline
management incorporating Geographical, Material and Conditions of
Loading Databases (with the ability to convert data to/from
existing databases) is the aim of the project. Case studies will
play an important role in defining damage processes and permissible
damage criteria, as many of the existing transit CCE/NIS pipelines,
which also link Russia with Western Europe, are up to 30 years old.
Research Institutes in Hungary (Bay Zoltan) , Ukraine (Problems of
Strength) and Bulgaria (Metals Science) will cooperate with the
SME Gas and Oil Consultancy (BB and Associates) in Poland in
acquiring additional relevant data from CCE/NIS countries.
The academic partners in the technological universities of Miskolc
(Hungary) , Vienna (Austria) and Bradford (UK) will assist
especially in defining the different damage processes (brittle
fracture, corrosion, fatigue, stress corrosion cracking, corrosion
fatigue) and assessing Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) methods
applied to pipelines and the repair technologies used, world-wide.
Analysis will be supported by laboratory testing (including actual
pipeline sections by internal pressurization) and failure analysis
by modern microstructural and microanalytical techniques.
In developing the Assessment of Reliability Module (ARM) for the
KBS, reference will be made to existing CODE-s for flaw assessment
and lifetime estimation methods used in different countries.
Software will also be developed to allow data derived from case
studies to be incorporated into the KBS.
In establishing its advanced KBS, the consortium will build on
existing cooperation in developing pipeline management systems
between Bay Zoltan Institute - Institute of Problems of
Strength-Transneftediagnostika and Miskolc University - Hungarian
Oil and Gas Company respectively. These industrialists will pilot
test the consortiums' KBS and BB and Associates seek its
exploitation by further pipeline operators.
Technical leadership will be provided by Bay Zoltan Institute and
coordination by the University of Bradford.
The proposal conforms with Worksector 7. 3 specifically -
Maintainability and reliability: Development of support tools for
improved product performance, reliability and maintainability. To
advance the capability and applicability of mathematical modelling
supporting design, including the integration of modelling
techniques with defect and failure mode analysis needed for
reliability and predictive maintenance.
Achievements : Foreseen Results
Information database on pipeline materials, flaw assessment
procedures, NDT methods in CCE-NIS countries; Knowledge Based
System (as a programme package) for defect and failure mode

Development of a photothermal measuring technique for the
determination of hardness profile in steel
Record Control Number : 39961
Quality Validation Date : 2000-05-03
Update Date : 2000-05-03
Title : Development of a photothermal measuring technique for the
determination of hardness profile in steel
Subject Index Code : Aerospace Technology, Industrial Manufacture, Materials Technology
General Information : The performance of surface hardened parts is a major issue in
automotive and aerospace industries. There is, therefore, a strong
need of hardening companies to improve the quality control of their
products by introducing new measurement systems which allow for
non-destructive, non-contacting hardness profile measurements as an
alternative to the presently used destructive inspection methods.
It is the aim of this project to develop a contact free,
non-destructive photothermal measurement methodology. This will
result in the design of a photothermal hardness measurement system
which will be an important step to achieve a 100 % on-line
production control. The network is proposed for Thematic Networks
Type 2 as an Implementation Phase Network. The measurement method
will be developed for surface hardened steel samples Radiometric
photothermal measurement methods will be optimised for hardness
testing and applicability in an industrial environment. Calibration
curves relating hardness to thermal diffusivity changes will be
elaborated and recommendations for the use of the radiometric
photothermal method for a specific hardening treatment will be
given. An important task is the further development of existing
mathematical inversion schemes for calculating the thermal
diffusivity profile from photothermal data. Using the calibration
curves in combination with microstructural studies, this will
result in a methodology for hardness profile measurements. The
partnership consists of end-users of hardness quality control
systems who also will supply samples from their production lines.
Small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) as well as a major
European car manufacturer collaborate with research institutes
specialised in photothermal measurements and materials science. It
is expected that the innovative hardening measurement technique
will improve the competitivity of the industrial partners by
increasing the reliability of hardened products by an on-line
quality control.

CORDIS Database: RESULTS
Multi-sensor Inspection System for Component Testing : towards more
reliable NDT AppLications
Record Control Number : 24341
Quality Validation Date : 2000-04-28
Update Date : 2000-04-28
Abstract : Chemical industry and Energy providers have a genuine economical
interest to improve plant availability and reduce maintenance costs.
Non destructive testing is used to detect flaws before they become
critical and to predict remaining plant lifetime as accurately as
possible. Therefore, increasing the reliability and accuracy of
inspections while reducing the overall costs is a key demand from
the industry.
The goal of the MISTRAL project is to design, develop, and evaluate
multi-sensor approaches on welded components shared by most of the
companies in the above mentioned fields
MISTRAL was meant to demonstrate the efficiency of a
multi-technique approach to non destructive testing for radiography
and ultrasonic testing on the one hand and for ultrasonic testing
and eddy-current testing on the other hand.
During the first part of the project the partners decided to select
a generic family of components instead of compiling a list of
special cases. The component family finally chosen was generic,
multi-material, welded tubes with a wide range of diameters.
Depending on the NDT techniques involved, the area of interest
varies: For EC and UT fusion defects must be located at or close to
the access surface of the component whereas for XR and UT fusion
one is more interested in flaws in the volume.
Two prototypes of the combined EC+UT probe have been built and
successfully tested: One probe is adapted to the surface of the
Core Spray Nozzle (a mock-up for one of the components mentioned in
the previous chapter) , the other probe has a flat bottom.
Extensive tests with these probes have been performed.
The acquisition procedure for XR+UT had to address one big
challenge : the Coordinates for both inspections had to be provided
in a common reference system with high accuracy. This difficulty
has been fully addressed. The present procedure has led to fully
relevant XR+UT data sets.
Conversion modules to convert most of the proprietary data formats
produced by the partners to the trappist standard format are now
available.
The processing tools developed by MISTRAL are a set of inversion
modules which make each set of single technique data more legible
and less noisy. These algorithms which had been available since
mid-term, have been further improved and finalized.
The multi technique fusion algorithms are now available : they
consist of a prototype Bayesian classifier for data fusion produced
by the University of Cagliari, a weighted sum fusion module
produced by TNO and a module applying the Dempster-Shafer
combination rule delivered by EDF.
The so-called MISTRAL industrial prototype is mainly a combination
of the above mentioned results. They were fully integrated and
equipped with an advanced user interface backed by a commercial
visualization software (currently this is AVS/Express) .
A fracture mechanics code was delivered with an integrated user
interface. Tests were performed.
