AMDATA NDE Technology LLC announces the capability of back-fitting Model 5090 automated scanners to owners of TomoscanTM imaging systems originally supplied from R/D Tech Inc. of Quebec, Canada. The Model 5090 is a robust portable scanner for piping, vessel, and/or plate scanning that is a standard product of Westinghouse NDE Products. As such, it is also inherently compatible with Westinghouse's IntraSpectTM imaging systems as part of its servo based GA-1000 series scan control subsystem.
Back-fit capabilities of a 5090 have been demonstrated for both generations of R/D Tech imaging systems: Tomoscan and µTomoscanTM. As a result, owners of such imaging systems now have a proven alternative to their OEM scanner options.
In the case of a back-fitting a 5090 to the older Tomoscan system, it involves providing a modified Westinghouse NDE Products' GA-1002 scan control amplifier module in addition to the 5090 scanner and related cabling. Owners of the Tomoscan unit also need to have a TCR-970 motor controller board or equivalent already installed.
In the case of back-fitting a 5090 into the current generation µTomoscan, it can be connected to the R/D Tech scan controller/amplifier (i.e., MCDU-02 servo based unit). In addition to the 5090 scanner, a translator/umbilical cable is necessary, and can be provided by either vendor.
The Model 5090 is a 2-axis servo-motor based scanner with a maximum scanning speed of 10 inches per second (25.4 cm/sec) and a payload capacity of 15 pounds (6.8 kg). It has been the workhorse scanner of the IntraSpect product line since the changeover from stepper to servo technology years ago.
Prime users of such automated scanner technology are field inspection service companies, and manufacturing and production facilities in industries ranging from Oil & Gas and Nuclear Power to Aerospace.
