		recherche pour la protection, la conservation et la mise en valeur 
		du patrimoine culturel : opportunités pour les entreprises 
		européennes, Strasbourg (FR) , 22-24 novembre 2000 
		
		The conference was initiated under the French Presidency by the 
		French Ministry of Culture and Communication in collaboration with 
		the European Commission's Directorate-General for Research. 
		
		This volume contains the proceedings of the conference, including 
		26 individual papers and a round table discussion. It is the first 
		time within this series of conferences that the authors' 
		contributions have been gathered into a single publication. The 
		papers are grouped under six main topics, corresponding to the 
		different sessions that were held during the course of the 
		conference: 
		
		- How do we assess pollutant damage and achieve a balance between 
		costs and benefits? 
		- What is the scope for using optical technologies for cultural 
		heritage conservation? 
		- How do we reconcile the sustainable development of cities with 
		the preservation of cultural heritage? 
		- Conservation materials: treatment compatibility, re-treatment or 
		reversibility? 
		- Microclimates within museums, churches, libraries and archives: 
		for better or for worse? 
		- How do we balance tourism with sustainable exploitation and 
		management of cultural heritage? 
		
		The individual papers are mostly in English, but the opening and 
		closing speeches, the round table, the session reports and 
		abstracts of all the papers are in English and in French.
