The test stand (see attached picture), comprising nearly 250 feet (76 meters) of both carbon and stainless steel four-inch schedule 40 pipe, can be filled with water (not pressurized) to better simulate an in-use pipe system. The piping itself contains flaws from 10-50% deep, including nested flaws, cracks, pitting, and ground out flaws. The insulation is three-inch thick calcium silicate secured with metal wire, and can be soaked with water to better simulate field conditions. To accommodate NDE methods that require access to the pipe surface, removable plugs of insulation and jacket are installed at the end of each pipe, and at 20 foot intervals between the ends.
