The system called "Spotline" was developed for use in body-shell construction. It combines the ultrasonic testing integrated in welding robots with a special data management system. Ultrasonic sensors fitted directly on the welding guns ensure a hundred per cent testing throughout the welding operation. The signals are guided from every welding gun to an ultrasonic client which evaluates the information with the aid of fuzzy logic and neural network technology.
The test results are then transferred on line from the client to the SQL database of the server and are stored separately according to the guns, components, date and time. The installation control room, the specialist welding departments and the administrator finally receive a graphically prepared representation of the results via an interface directly to the respective workplaces.
The system is already used in the form of three pilot installations in the series fabrication of German automobile manufacturers. In addition to complete documentation which complies with ISO and VDA (Association of the Automobile Industry) and lowers the product-liability risk, there is also great potential for cost savings due to less scarp, reduced postweld machining, lower testing costs or the accelerated release of tested automobile bodies.
