CORDIS Database: RESULTS

------------------------------------------------------------------- Calibration data set from numerical modelling using dynamic wave propagation code Record Control Number : 30557 Quality Validation Date : 2003-09-11 Update Date : 2003-09-25 Abstract : The numerical modelling studies undertaken in OMNIBUS provide a unique data-set giving insight into the effects of the physical properties of a rock-mass on the passage of ultrasonic waves. The modelling was undertaken using the Wave3D finite difference code. The results include investigations of parameters such as crack density, fluid content and applied stress and consider both P and S wave propagation. The modelling gives detailed quantitative information on variations in the phase and amplitude spectra compared to waves passed through a perfectly elastic body. The effect of the sample on amplitude and phase velocity has been studied. These results will provide new knowledge on the interpretation of ultrasonic data through rocks with different properties. The interpretation could be extended to other materials such as concrete and metals. The results will also have applications to understanding the transmission of acoustic waves at lower, seismic frequencies. The results thus have applications to a wide range of engineering scenarios in the radioactive waste, civil engineering, mining and petroleum sectors. The algorithms and knowledge gained from these results will provide the opportunity for exploitation in the form of consultancy services to the project partners.
