Rapid R&D™ is a quick turnaround service to provide the NDT marketplace with a cost effective feasibility study of a given NDT application. The pathfinder service is based upon immersion and contact Ultrasonics (UT). MTC has advanced color C-Scan systems to support such a service.
The service is based upon receiving a sample of the application, with or without an appropriate defect or simulated defect. If a reflector is not present, MTC can in most cases design and arrange to have a simulated defect machined into the sample. The sample then becomes the standard from which the feasibility testing is based upon. From this point, the Rapid R&D process kicks in, leading to a report of findings within 1 to 3 days.
This streamlined process is intended for customers that need a quick and inexpensive go/no-go decision about the feasibility of UT (or another NDT method) to solve a given inspection demand. The Rapid R&D service is not intended to replace long, in-depth scientific studies such as POD testing where required. In many cases, however, the results of a Rapid R&D effort can be transformed into a production technique in a similarly small level of effort and duration.
MTC, located in South Windsor, CT (USA) provides NDT laboratory inspection services to various markets ranging from aerospace to automotive industries. Their in-house capabilities include immersion and contact ultrasonics (UT), chemical etch and etch anodizing, fluorescent penetrant inspection (FPI), and magnetic particle inspection (MPI). With regard to aircraft engine manufacturers, MTC is one of the few approved independent laboratories in the world for providing Blue Etch Anodize (BEA) inspections.
